The 158 pieces of mixed-media art showcased in the fourth edition of Incite, The Best of Mixed Media will realign your inner balance and awaken your creative spirit. In turn, they will help you to gain a new appreciation for the role art plays in your life, while inspiring you to create unique artwork of your own."

Artists Raise Money for Cancer Research!

I just wanted to share with you an event that I am involved with that is helping to raise funds for cancer research. A Small World is an international exhibition of small works held at the Magpie Springs Gallery in South Australia. All works submitted from US artists such as myself will be a gift, where 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the charity!

The Magpie Springs Gallery has also aligned with a group of women who raise money for Cancer Research - through the Marilyn Jetty swim women Facebook pageFrom the director Avril Thomas, "As artists we can share our works and make connections never before possible every day with each other on social media. We often see our artist friends works but the chance to see or even own an original from that artist is perhaps slim, especially if they are on the other side of the world. This is a chance to take part in an International show, purchase an original piece from your favorite artist and support cancer research - it’s about making connections through art."

For my postcard-sized painting entitled Through the Fire (4" x 6"), I chose to create a strong female figure who is fighting and conquering breast cancer, a plight that many women I know have gone through. Over the breast area on the right, I placed a symbolic battle shield, acting as protective armor. The figure also has the breast cancer symbol, a pink ribbon, lightly painted on her face.

The warrior-like figure is surrounded by the medical symbol, which I altered to transform the traditional snakes into flaming dragons, encompassing her body in a heart-like shape. The gem that appears on her chest is a metaphor for her heart that is fighting the good fight. The area in red almost looks like a heart and the gold extensions from it create the valves that enter and leave the heart to go to the other areas of the body.

The element of fire is also significant in the work. It has the power to be very destructive, but in the end brings about growth and renewal. This process is much like the process of undergoing chemotherapy. I chose to play up the sacred areas of the mind and the heart, as they are what we use to fight with when encountering great struggles in life. Keeping our minds and hearts focused on the light at the end of the tunnel helps us to see our way through the fire!

The exhibition opening will be Nov 13, 2016 at 2:00pm and the show will run until January 15, 2017. The gallery is open Friday through Sunday.

Bidders will have an opportunity to buy this painting and the works of many other artists, making a contribution to cancer research!
